A joist is never sized by span alone. The occupancy matters as much as the length: sleeping rooms and attics take 30 psf live load and are tabulated in R502.3.1(1), while every other habitable room takes 40 psf and is tabulated in R502.3.1(2). Those are two different tables, not one table with a knob on it. Dead load is a separate input too — a tiled bathroom and a carpeted bedroom are not the same floor at the same span.

Spans are computed the way the printed tables are derived: bending, shear and L/360 deflection under live load, solved over the NDS reference design values for your species and grade, then capped at the tabulated value. The result shows what governed — usually bending on a long span, deflection on a short stiff one.

Cantilever limits are a ratio of the back span and depend on what the cantilever carries. Any cantilever is returned as engineering required rather than estimated.

The inputs that matter

Clear span
The distance between supports, not the overall room size. If a beam splits the floor, each side is its own span and both are much shorter than the room.
Occupancy
Sleeping room or normal living area. It picks both the live load and which of the two R502.3.1 tables your joist is checked against.
Dead load
10 psf for normal framing, subfloor and finish; 20 psf for tile, stone or gypcrete. It is a separate input and is never assumed.
Species and grade
Douglas Fir-Larch spans further than Spruce-Pine-Fir, and a No.2 joist spans further than a No.3. Both change the answer materially.

Common questions

How far can a 2x10 floor joist span?

It depends on the spacing, the species and grade, and the load. A Douglas Fir-Larch No.2 2x10 at 16 inch centers reaches roughly 15 to 16 feet in a living area at 40 psf live load, and further in a bedroom at 30 psf. Enter your exact case rather than working from a rule of thumb — grade alone moves it by more than a foot.

What size joist do I need for a 14 foot span?

A 14 foot living-area span at 16 inch centers generally needs a 2x10 in common framing species — a 2x8 only reaches about 12 feet 9 inches at 40 psf. Tightening the spacing to 12 inch centers or moving to a stiffer grade can change which size works. Use the suggest button to see the smallest size that fits, then have it checked.

What is L/360 deflection and why does it matter?

L/360 means the joist may not deflect more than its span divided by 360 under live load — about half an inch over 14 feet. It is a serviceability limit, not a strength one: a floor can be perfectly strong and still feel bouncy or crack a tile floor. On shorter spans deflection often governs before bending does.

Can I use engineered I-joists instead?

Yes, and they span further than sawn lumber, but they are proprietary products the IRC does not tabulate. This calculator shows catalog-typical figures and marks any I-joist result as requiring verification against the specific manufacturer's current span tables. It will never claim an I-joist complies on IRC authority.
