Wall Framing Calculator and Cut List

Lay out a stud wall and get every piece it takes to build it. Enter the wall length, the framed height and your stud spacing, place doors and windows where they actually fall, and the calculator returns the position of every stud, king stud, jack stud and cripple — plus a cut list you can take to the lumber yard.

Studs are marked to the near edge the way you actually pull a tape: hook the plate, mark 15-1/4 inches, then every 16 inches after, so the stud centre lands on 16 and your sheathing breaks on framing. Corner assemblies are counted properly, whether you frame a three-stud corner, a California corner or use drywall clips — each uses a different amount of lumber.

Headers are the part worth being careful about. A header is not sized by the opening width alone; it is sized by the load coming down on it. Give the calculator the building width, what the header carries and the ground snow load and it checks your header against the IRC table. Leave any of that out and it tells you what is missing rather than guessing.

Which code tables this works from

IRC Table R602.3(5) — stud size, height and spacing
Maximum stud height for 2x4 and 2x6 studs at each spacing, bearing and non-bearing. Your wall height is checked against it.
IRC Table R602.7(1) and R602.7(2) — girder and header spans
Header spans for exterior and interior bearing walls, keyed on building width and ground snow load. Headers are checked against a computed load using the same method.
IRC R602.3.2 — top plate splices
The upper top plate breaks at least 24 inches from the joint below it and laps the return wall at each corner. The takeoff includes that lap allowance as its own line.

The inputs that matter

Stud spacing
16 inch centers is the default for most residential walls. 24 inch centers uses less lumber and is standard in advanced framing, but limits stud height and needs thicker sheathing.
Bearing or non-bearing
A bearing wall carries the roof, ceiling or a floor above. It has a shorter maximum stud height and its headers carry real load. A partition carries only itself.
Building width
Half the building bears on this wall, and that is what sets the header load. It is required for a header check — an opening width on its own tells you nothing.
Corner style
Three-stud, two-stud, California and drywall-clip corners each use a different stud count and a different amount of insulation space. The takeoff counts them separately.

Common questions

How many studs do I need for a 20 foot wall at 16 inch centers?

A 20 foot wall laid out at 16 inch centers has 14 layout marks, but the real count depends on your openings and corners. Every stud whose body falls inside a door or window's king and jack zone is dropped rather than doubled up, and each opening adds its own kings, jacks and cripples. Enter your actual openings and the calculator gives you the exact count for each category.

What size header do I need over a 6 foot window?

There is no answer from the width alone. A header is sized by the load above it, which depends on the building width, whether it carries a roof, a floor, or both, the number of storeys above and the ground snow load. Supply those and the calculator checks your header. If any are missing it says so rather than producing a size you cannot rely on.

How long do I cut studs for an 8 foot wall?

92-5/8 inches is the standard pre-cut stud for an 8 foot wall with a double top plate. The stud does not run the full wall height — it sits on the bottom plate and is capped by two top plates, so 97-1/8 minus 4-1/2 inches of plate gives 92-5/8. The calculator works this out from your wall height and plate count.

What is a California corner and why use one?

A California corner uses two studs, the second turned flat to back the return wall's drywall, instead of the traditional three-stud post. It leaves the corner cavity open to insulate, which is why it is the advanced-framing standard. It uses one less stud per corner than a three-stud post.
